UCL was founded in 1826 to open up higher education in England to those who had been excluded from it – becoming the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms with men in 1878. Based on its founding date and starting teaching in 1828, UCL claims to be the third-oldest university in England.
UCL is primarily based in the Bloomsbury area of the London Borough of Camden, in central London.
